german lessons

here is am taking german lessons.   it's a crazy language with 3 forms of the, two types of past tense, . . . it just goes on and on.   if i'm going to suffer, i figured i'd share the misery.

alright seriously, i pick up things here and there that help me and i thought i would pass them on for anyone wanting to learn as well.

i'll group them but you will need some knowledge  of the language to make use of this stuff.

first, i'll post links to places i have found useful.   all of them are free, at least for a while.   but the free stuff has been useful to me so i'll share.

this is a good place to download some radio programs designed for the english speaker to learn german.   there are some worksheets to go with them as well i think.   these are a good way to listen and learn some basic things.

this is a good free course that comes in your email.   also a good starter program.

here are several good sites to help out

conjugating those pesky verbs -

the two forms of past tense

this is the site we used for our test preparations.   the sites are not set up in an "easy to use" way but if you can navigate it, you should find some helpful lessons.

this another site for learning the language.   i haven't done much with them because i had the classes but these are the sites our teacher gave us for learning

the 4 german cases - a major pain in the brain.  i'm just glad there are only 4 and not 26 or whatever like in palestinian.
i'm just going to refer you to a site to explain them.  this site has several good explanations of the language.   it's just a good reference site, at least for german

here are some of the signs up in our class that might help as well.

this is a list we got in school that we have to learn.   it's handy with akk = akkusitive and dat = dative.     akkusitive in blue because only the masculine articles change and dative is in pink because all of the articles change, (including feminine)   plus i find that akkusitive tends to be direct, like men.    where dative is more all around, where something is for instance, which is something you would be asking mom.   this is just my association for learning it.   you have to learn to do it intuitively, just because it sounds right.   when you speak english, you don't think about when to use "him" as opposed to "he" for instance, you have to do the same with german but this thought process helps you get through the first learning stages.
this list includes verb + präposition + kausus then the definition.  i took it from all in alphabetical to alphabetical in order of the prepositions.
